The reported shift is not simply toward larger aerial set pieces. It links aircraft choice, wingman orders, and first-person story scenes into a campaign built around a persistent squadron.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is set to bring aircraft customization and squadron command into a campaign that places more attention on the pilots between sorties. Xbox Wire says the game launches on Xbox Series X|S on October 2, while PlayStation Blog describes a first-person storytelling approach that keeps the player close to Joker Flight away from the cockpit.

A campaign built around Joker Flight

Xbox Wire says players can issue commands to Joker Flight during missions, directing squadmates to attack a selected target, engage freely, provide cover, or use special weapons. The outlet also describes missions ranging from escorts and bombing runs to air-to-air combat, with larger encounters involving a land battleship and a carrier fleet.

That command structure gives the squadron a practical role rather than treating it solely as radio accompaniment. Xbox Wire identifies Professor, Tasha, and Noise as recurring members of Joker Flight, while PlayStation Blog reports that squadmates also appear in briefings, intermission scenes, and mission chatter.

From briefing maps to first-person scenes

The change is more pronounced between missions. Xbox Wire says earlier entries largely used briefing maps and cinematic cutscenes, whereas Wings of Theve uses the game engine and a first-person perspective for time aboard the carrier Endurance, including its deck and mess hall.

PlayStation Blog likewise reports that the silent player character is more central to the narrative and can make limited responses during scenes. Those decisions do not alter the story, according to the publication, but Joker Flight responds to how the player leads them. Together, the reports suggest a campaign trying to make squad management and story presentation reinforce one another.

Aircraft choice carries through the campaign

Xbox Wire says Wings of Theve includes more than 30 aircraft. Players earn in-game credits through the campaign, including from additional objectives, then spend them on aircraft and upgrades in an aircraft tree.

The available roles are Fighters for combat, Multirole aircraft for versatility, Attackers for ground strikes, and Electronic Warfare aircraft for support. Before sorties, Xbox Wire says players can assemble a fighter group and apply upgrades for maneuverability, acceleration, and targeting.

For players, that makes aircraft selection part of mission planning rather than a purely cosmetic preference. The outlet also reports progressively challenging training missions, an important inclusion given its description of combat as dependent on managing speed and position as well as aiming.

The evidence points to a broader campaign focus

PC Gamer characterizes the flight action as a heightened blend of arcade handling and spectacle, and reports that changing weather and handling strengthen aerial encounters. That assessment is separate from Xbox Wire’s first-party account, but it aligns with the official emphasis on new cloud-layer technology and larger set pieces.

The meaningful shift in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve appears to be the effort to connect those sky battles to a squadron with mechanical and narrative presence. Aircraft progression, orders in combat, and first-person scenes aboard the Endurance all point toward a campaign where the people flying beside the player matter as much as the plane selected for the sortie.
