The Naturalist is Ball x Pit’s final planned free update

Kenny Sun & Friends scheduled The Naturalist Update for Ball x Pit for August 6, 2026. This article preserves the preview's announced plan, not a later installation or release-status check. The studio describes it as the game’s final free content update, following additional material created from ideas the team continued developing around launch.

The update adds two unlockable characters, 11 balls and five passive items. That sounds like a familiar content bundle, but the two characters are designed around opposite inventory rules that can change an entire build.

The Ballbearer doubles the number of ball slots available to the player but gives up passive items. The Hoary Hoarder does the reverse: only two ball slots are available, while the character receives twice as many passive slots. One favors a large active arsenal; the other asks a smaller set of balls to work with a much deeper equipment engine.

The new balls change targeting and tempo

PlayStation Blog detailed several of the 11 additions. Lightning Bug creates a firefly after every bounce; the firefly seeks the strongest enemy and releases nearby lightning damage. Mosquito Kingdom builds a swarm when it hits enemies, sends mosquitoes toward weaker targets and restores a small amount of health when a mosquito lands a killing blow.

Drill is built to pierce enemies from behind and increase its damage along the path. Flesh begins at half damage but accelerates with each bounce. Armageddon marks the first enemy it hits and calls down meteors across a three-tile area.

These designs do more than increase a number. They create different target priorities, board coverage and timing. Ballbearer players can combine more of those effects at once, while Hoary Hoarder builds need two carefully chosen balls that can take maximum advantage of passive Evolutions.

Five passives support new combinations

The update also adds five passive items. Platinum Dumbbell increases ball damage until the ball reaches the back wall, rewarding clean forward shots. Inglorious Hammer causes a wall or back-arena bounce to trigger a reduced-damage hit against a random enemy. Remote Detonator can create a level-one Bomb Ball when an enemy dies, extending a successful attack into another explosion.

Kenny Sun & Friends deliberately left some additions undisclosed in the preview, so players still have combinations to discover inside the update.

The developer describes this as the last planned free content update, rather than a promise to end every form of maintenance.

Platform and timing boundaries

PlayStation Blog specifically confirmed the August 6 update for PlayStation 5. Nintendo Life separately reported the final free update for Switch. Players on other versions should rely on the patch status shown by their own platform rather than assuming every regional update arrived at the same minute.

The sources do not provide a complete balance sheet, patch size or future maintenance plan. “Final free content update” also does not necessarily mean all bug fixes and support have ended, but it does set expectations that another comparable content drop is not currently promised.

The Naturalist is strongest when viewed as a build-design update. Ballbearer and Hoary Hoarder do not simply add two skins or stronger starting stats; they push players toward opposite theories of how a run should work. The 11 balls and five passives give both extremes new tools, making the final planned free update a meaningful reason to rebuild strategies rather than only collect more items.

Would you build around the Ballbearer’s extra balls or the Hoary Hoarder’s expanded passive inventory?
